John Grierson Grant

The John Grierson Grant, valued at up to AUD$1,000, has been set aside to assist with the costs involved in traveling to the biennial AALL conference (or, if the successful applicant lives near the conference, it may be used to assist with other costs). Delegates who meet the conditions of application (below), and are prepared to contribute to the Conference (see Expectations, below) may apply.

The closing date for applications will be announced mid-year in the year of an AALL conference, with successful applicants to  be notified shortly thereafter.

Conditions of application

  • You are currently employed as an Academic Language and Learning (ALL) professional at a tertiary institution in Australia.
  • You have never been to an AALL conference before.
  • You are a financial member of AALL at the time of the application.
  • At the time of the biennial AALL conference, you are employed as an ALL professional at a tertiary institution in Australia and will have been an ALL professional for not more than 18 months.

Expectations of the successful applicant

  • You are willing to facilitate an AALL conference roundtable: New Academic Language and Learning staff - challenges and opportunities.

How to Apply

Applicants must:

  • Complete the application form (doc/167 kb)
  • Produce two one-page letters of recommendation
    • One from a student with whom you have worked; and
    • One from a current ALL colleague
  • Produce a 500-word (12 point, 1.5 line space) Applicant Statement in which you:
    • Outline why you should receive the Grant and how it will be used;
    • Propose how you will oranise and facilitate a roundtable for 'New ALL staff - challenges and opportunities'.

Judging the application

The John Grierson Grant applications will be considered by a Committee of between 3 and 4 people, comprising the AALL Conference convener, a representative from the University of Western Sydney, and one other senior ALL representative. The committee will consider the applications on two key grounds: eligibility and the interest of the proposal for the ALL New Advisers' roundtable.


Applications must be received no later than TBA for the 2019 conference). Applications received after this date will not be considered.


Application will be considered by the John Grierson Grant Committee and the successful applicant will be notified once the decision is made.
