Steven Thurlow from University of Melbourne presented on the topic ‘Creative Collisions: Advising, creativity and academic writing in the age of AI’ in the fifth (and final) session of Season 4 of the Connect. Inspire. Share series of webinars on the 26th October 2023.

ALL Advisers are often caught between student writers’ wishes to create inspiring, creative and personally meaningful writing and disciplinary demands for more traditional academic work. Our work as writing specialists sees us switching between these conflicting expectations, overlaid with student demands that we smooth out their writing; while duly fitting (or misfitting) it into an institutionally acceptable template of what writing should be. Steven will discuss implications for ALL practice from his doctoral research in this area and explore ideas on how Artificial Intelligence programs such as ChatGPT may impact on this rapidly evolving area.
